Diary of a Wombat by Jackie French **Review & Brush with Fame**

Hey Everyone!

Today was the day I had been looking forward to for the past two weeks, ever since I had found out Australian Children's Laureate and author of over 170 books, Jackie French, was coming to my local library! Squee! A famous author was coming to the Northern Territory!

She came during the usual Tunes and Tales session at the library, so there were parents and kids everywhere. It was so much fun to hear her read one of the books she had written. Jackie read Dinosaurs Love Cheese, which we had borrowed last week and the kids had loved, then got everyone involved in a dinosaurs love cheese song.

After the story and sing along, Jacke held a little competition. Lets find out who is most like a wombat.

Do you likes carrots? "Yes" we all said.
Do you have fur on top of your head? We all touched our hair, "Yes"
Do you have no hair on your nose? We all touched our noses, just to check "Yes"
Can you scratch your ear with your toes? Well, I did contemplate attempting that one for a moment, because I really wanted to win the book, but luckily my daughter pulled her foot up to her ear and I pointed at her instead. I got her to do it a couple of times more, just to make sure Jackie saw her, and she won the book! Molly was feeling a little shy, so hid behind her groovy new sunglasses when I took her up the front to collect her book.

Then we lined up to get our new book signed. I love the little wombat Jackie drew under her signature. Once we got home, we sat down and read it (again).

Diary of a Wombat by Jackie French

autographedWombats are cuddly-looking, slow-moving Australian animals. Their favorite activities are eating, sleeping, and digging holes. Here, in the words of one unusually articulate wombat, is the tongue-in-cheek account of a busy week; eating, sleeping, digging holes . . . and training its new neighbors, a family of humans, to produce treats on demand. This entertaining book, with its brief, humorous text and hilarious illustrations, will endear the wombat to young children, who may recognize in the determined furry creature some qualities that they share.

Hey! Here's my review.

We have borrowed this book a few times from the library, but today we were lucky enough to win a copy from the author when she came to visit our local library! I love this book, it's such a simple and fun insight into the life of a wombat.

**Interview with my 4 year old (who won the book by scratching her ear with her toe, just like a wombat)**

Me: What did you think of this book?
Her: Awesome!

Me: Which bit did you like best?
Her: All of it.

Me: Do you like carrots?
Her: Yes

Me: Do you have fur on the top of your head?
Her: Yes, it's hair.

Me: Do you have no hair on your nose?
Her: *nods*

Me: Can you scratch you ear with your toes?
Her: Yes *demonstrates again*

Me: Would you like to have a wombat in out backyard?
Her: Yesee. Mum can we have a pet wombat?
Me: I don't think we can have a pet wombat, they live in the wild.

Me: Show me which page you like the best.
Her: This one. When she attacked the hairy creature and it's a door mat and the wombat tear it. Then she tear (stare) for carrots. She loves carrots.
