One by Sarah Crossan

free verseTippi and Grace share everything—clothes, friends . . . even their body. Writing in free verse, Sarah Crossan tells the sensitive and moving story of conjoined twin sisters, which will find fans in readers of Gayle Forman, Jodi Picoult, and Jandy Nelson.

Tippi and Grace. Grace and Tippi. For them, it’s normal to step into the same skirt. To hook their arms around each other for balance. To fall asleep listening to the other breathing. To share. And to keep some things private. The two sixteen-year-old girls have two heads, two hearts, and each has two arms, but at the belly, they join. And they are happy, never wanting to risk the dangerous separation surgery.

But the girls’ body is beginning to fight against them. And soon they will have to face the impossible choice they have avoided for their entire lives.

Hey! Here's my review.

This is the first novel I've read that was written in free verse. I was a little wary to begin with because I don't read much poetry, but this was so easy to read. It didn't come across too flowery and didn't leave me feeling confused. I got caught up in the story and read quite quickly, so I lost some of the impact from the writing style. I think this would work really well as an audiobook if the narrator can do it justice.

I was expecting to have two POV, one from each of the twins, but the story is told completely from Grace's perspective. I admit, I did go in with the curiosity to find out what is life like for conjoined twins, how do they manage everyday tasks etc. The book is not full of those details, and after getting to know Grace, I was glad that she still had some privacy and didn't have to explain how she goes to the toilet. I realised that I was being one of the people staring, which gave me a bit of a wake up call. I loved that I was able forget that Grace and Tippi were literally joined at the hip, and see Grace as a girl, falling in love.

I received this book free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
