Juggling Jobs

Hey Everyone!

I'd like to introduce you to Skye McNeil who has popped in to chat about her busy life and her latest book.

Juggling Jobs
Hello! I’m Skye McNeil and I write romantic suspense and contemporary romance. Thank you so much, Renee, for letting me hop on your website today.
One of the questions I’m asked a lot is “Is writing your only job?” Sadly, my life as a full-time author has yet to blossom. But, that doesn’t mean writing isn’t a full-time job on its own. In my life, I have three jobs. I have a gorgeous almost 8-year-old daughter at home. She is my number one priority. If you’re a mom or you’ve been around kids, you know it’s a full-time endeavor. Next, my second job as a paralegal at a law firm. We have cases that range from criminal (my favorite) to probate (not my favorite) and everything in between. The great thing about working for a small firm is that I also have the chance to gain a ton of information and story ideas all while at work! Talk about a fabulous setup, right? But when the kiddo falls asleep, the lunch hour arrives, and every other minute in between, comes job number three: writing.

That third job, though, doesn’t always feel like a job. Well, when it comes to editing, I’ll take it back every single time, but for the majority of the writing experience, it’s my passion and not a job. When I write, I’m somewhere else in my own world where I control what happens.

It’s difficult to carve out enough time for my jobs. Some days, it feels like I’m being pulled three different directions all at once. I’m not saying being a career mom isn’t rewarding, but I’d be totally fine with a vacation every now and then, so I can focus solely on writing. What I’ve learned over the years is that it’s okay to dedicate time to furthering your career and spending time with the people you love. Juggling jobs is stressful, believe me, but I think it’s well worth it. In the end, I have a daughter who’s learning that careers are fun yet challenging; a day job that offers insight when I least suspect it; and a feeling of accomplishment when I hold those paperbacks for the first (and 100th) time. It’s okay to juggle. It’s how we learn what works for us.
